According to Paul McCartney, this song is about the spirit of his mother coming to him in a dream when he was in his late teens.

Paul McCartney’s mother died when he was just 14 years old. She had had cancer, and her death hit the boy hard. McCartney said that his mother told him, “It’s going to be OK, son. Let it be,” in the dream. Folks have also asked him if there’s any religious undertone to the lyric. He’s actually been cryptic on this point, saying that it’s up to the fans’ interpretation if there’s any tie to the Virgin Mary.

Malcolm Who?

Malcolm Evans was the “fixer.” If one of the band members needed replacement strings or drum heads for an instrument after stores closed, Evans would sort it. If anything else needed doing, Evans would figure it out. He was integral in the day-to-day functioning of The Beatles. There is a recording of one of the Beatles’ sessions, and in it, you can hear McCartney fooling around, singing, “… Brother Malcolm comes to me.” Evans says that Paul told him that it was going to be Brother Malcolm, but he had to change it so that folks wouldn’t get the wrong idea. Evans was killed in a confrontation with police in 1976, so McCartney has the final word on the matter.

Lost Recordings

John Lennon gave an interview once where he said that recording the album “Let it Be” was “hell.” He said that the group was having internal problems and that they were lackluster and ambivalent about the record. Only McCartney was gung ho about it. Lennon described it as The Beatles working “… with their suits off.”

There is also strange news about Lennon when it comes to the rumored release of both a new pressing of “Let it Be,” the album, and other previously unreleased recordings by The Beatles. There are rumors of efforts to clone John Lennon. The bizarre announcement comes from a dentist named Daniel Zuk, who bought some of Lennon’s teeth in 2011. He says that his plan is to use the DNA from the teeth in the cloning process. Whether he might also want to clone Evans to continue his argument with McCartney is unknown.

“Let it Be” in the 21st Century

The song is a popular choice among performers on reality shows about competitive singing. Contestants on “The Voice,” “American Idol,” and “America’s Got Talent” have chosen the song. Jimmy Fallon also did a bit on the show for Paul’s 80th birthday, saying that even he couldn’t afford to pay for the rights to sing it. Later that same season, the entire cast of “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” sang the song with parodied lyrics about Twitter.

Lyrics

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be, be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shinin’ until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
