This song is about being in a drug haze while feeling a strong physical attraction to someone who doesn’t seem to care.

Kid Indigo Sets the Record Straight

To some, he’s better known as Breezy. Others call him Kid Indigo. There’s also C. Breezy, Indigo Breezy, CB and every other iteration you can think of.

It’s easy for things to get out of hand when there’s no shortage of lyrical interpretations and people online to add their own uninformed two cents. It sometimes becomes akin to a supermassive game of telephone on the scale of an MMORPG.

Under the Influence” isn’t exactly new, having come out in 2019 on the extended version of Brown’s Indigo album. But a surge of viral attention on TikTok in 2022 meant there was a wave of new listeners, many of whom had completely misheard some of the lyrics.

Contributing to the problem, apps and music platforms like these are infamously notorious for having wrong lyrics. These errors can completely butcher the original intent of the song, or at the very least, leave listeners scratching their heads.

Breezy cleared things up himself on his Instagram Story on November 15th, 2022: “They been messing up lyrics lately on these music platforms… YALL BEEN HAVING A FIELD DAY WITH UNDER THE INFLUENCE.” He then corrected the lyric that fans had heard as “rubbing, touching,” clarifying that he actually said “Robitussin.”

He also pointed out that the words are, “Your body lightweight speaks to me,” instead of, “Your body language speaks to me.” He colored his correction with crying-laughing and side-eye emojis just to make sure fans got the point. These errant lyrics may arguably be just as good, but just like Nina Simone, Chris Brown doesn’t want to be misunderstood.

What the Real Lyrics Mean

The introductory lyrics, “Kido, Kido / K-K-Kido on the beat, better run it back,” refer to Ayoola Oladapo Agboola. He’s a DJ and record producer out of Nigeria better known by fans by his stage name, Kiddominant, often shortened to just Kido. Kiddominant worked on this song with Breezy. They also worked together on his song Lower Body, so it’s no surprise gets his own introduction with his producer tag here.

In the first verse, Breezy is mourning the loss of his ability to consume more potent drugs because he’s lost in a haze of highly sedating cold medicine:

“Fuckin’ Robitussin / I don’t know why this shit got me lazy right now, yeah / Can’t do Percocets or Molly (Molly) / I’m turnin’ one, tryna live it up here right, right, right”

Once we get into the pre-chorus and chorus, Breezy tells the story of how physically attracted he is to the woman he’s singing about. He proceeds to invite her over to get physically intimate, but the object of his affection remains aloof and acts indifferent about their relationship. Brown, however, believes she feels otherwise.

[PRE-CHORUS]

“Baby, you can / Ride it, ooh, yeah / Bring it over to my place / And you be like / “Baby, who cares?” / But I know you care / Bring it over to my place”

[CHORUS]

“You don’t know what you did, did to me / Your body lightweight speaks to me / I don’t know what you did, did to me / Your body lightweight speaks to me”

In the second verse, Brown makes a reference to a GoPro that could be interpreted one of two ways: “Let’s GoPro and make a video,” could just as easily be read as, “Let’s go pro and make a video.” Either way, in the context of the rest of the verse, Brown is saying that the sex is so good that they should film it. The difference is that, in the second meaning, Breezy goes a step further to say that they could make it as professional porn actors if they wanted to.

Lyrics

Get up, get up
Kiddominant on the beat, better run it back

Fuckin’ Robitussin
I don’t know why this shit got me lazy right now, yeah
Can’t do Percocets or Molly
I’m turnin’ one, tryna live it up here right, right, right

Baby, you can
Ride it, ooh, yeah
Bring it over to my place
And you be like
“Baby, who cares?”
But I know you care
Bring it over to my place

You don’t know what you did, did to me
Your body lightweight speaks to me
I don’t know what you did, did to me
Your body lightweight speaks to me

I can make it hurricane on it
Hunnid bands, make it rain on it
Tie it up, put a chain on it
Make you tattoo my name on it, oh
Make you cry like a baby, yeah
Let’s GoPro and make a video, yeah
Make you cry like a baby, yeah
Let’s GoPro and make a video
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Baby, you can
Ride it, ooh, yeah
Bring it over to my place
And you be like
“Baby, who cares?”
But I know you care
Bring it over to my place

You don’t know what you did, did to me
Your body lightweight speaks to me
I don’t know what you did, did to me
Your body lightweight speaks to me

Baby, you can
Ride it, ooh, yeah
And you be like
“Baby, who cares?”
But I know you care
