“Levitating” is a pop anthem all about dancing, having fun and falling in love.
As such, one might not think that the song’s meaning goes remarkably deep. But there are plenty of golden nuggets of added lyrical significance that Dua Lipa manages to pack into almost every line.
The song is meant to capture the spirit of fun and enjoyment that comes with a new romance. Dua Lipa is singing about what it feels like to fall in love, particularly when the timing is just right and you’re both at just the right places in your lives. In essence, the song is saying that when everything happens to align perfectly like that, it’s time for you to take the leap and make your move on that special someone.
Although the artist has been mired in a series of legal battles that pertain to alleged copyright infringement, the meaning behind the song’s lyrics couldn’t be clearer – and fans dance to it just as enthusiastically as any of her other hits.
A Party Song Made By Party People
“Levitating” turned out to be a major highlight of Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia tour. The theme behind Future Nostalgia is indisputably the joy and freedom of dance and love, and “Levitating” is a pop anthem meant for clubs and parties.
It should come as no surprise that this jam was conceived in a party environment. After little more than a day’s work at London’s Sarm Studios with co-writers Clarence Coffee Jr., Sarah Hudson and Stephen “Koz” Kozmeniuk, the lyrics were finalized and it was time to lay them down. The song’s hook gravitates around a synthetic choir sound that Koz created. “Levitating” is a Koz and Stuart Price production.
Divine Donut Inspiration
A bad case of songwriter’s block led to an unexpected source of inspiration when the idea of ordering donuts was thrown around the studio. Lipa’s trepidation about the inevitable sugar rush and the idea of bouncing off the walls eventually made her think of levitation. The artist even points to specific lyrics like “sugarboo” being influenced by this fateful snack suggestion.
It’s easy to picture some of these lyrics making their way onto Dua Lipa’s ever-growing collection of tattoos. It might seem, then, that the lyrics don’t merit much scrutiny. But the more you dig into Dua’s irresistibly fun, provocative, and often ambiguous word choice, the more you realize can be derived from these lyrics.
It’s a song about going out and dancing, which makes it the perfect subject matter for the genre as it allows the dancers to live the experience of her lyrics and truly let everything go. “I got you, moonlight, you’re my starlight / I need you all night, come on, dance with me.”
In an interview with Apple Music, Dua Lipa said, “This is about me exploring happy songs and doing something that’s not dance-crying.” She went on to describe its feel as otherwordly: one that literally gives the listener the same sensation of levitation you get when you fall head over heels for someone.
Lyrics
If you wanna run away with me, I know a galaxy
And I can take you for a ride
I had a premonition that we fell into a rhythm
Where the music don’t stop for life
Glitter in the sky, glitter in my eyes
Shining just the way I like
If you’re feeling like you need a little bit of company
You met me at the perfect time
You want me, I want you, baby
My sugarboo, I’m levitating
The Milky Way, we’re renegading
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I got you, moonlight, you’re my starlight
I need you all night, come on, dance with me
I’m levitating
You, moonlight, you’re my starlight (you’re the moonlight)
I need you all night, come on, dance with me
I’m levitating
I believe that you’re for me, I feel it in our energy
I see us written in the stars
We can go wherever, so let’s do it now or never, baby
Nothing’s ever, ever too far
Glitter in the sky, glitter in our eyes
Shining just the way we are
I feel like we’re forever, every time we get together
But whatever, let’s get lost on Mars
You want me, I want you, baby
My sugarboo, I’m levitating
The Milky Way, we’re renegading
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I got you, moonlight, you’re my starlight
I need you all night, come on, dance with me
I’m levitating
You, moonlight, you’re my starlight (you’re the moonlight)
I need you all night, come on, dance with me
I’m levitating (whoo)
You can fly away with me tonight
You can fly away with me tonight
Baby, let me take you for a ride
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I’m levitating (whoo)
You can fly away with me tonight
You can fly away with me tonight
Baby, let me take you for a ride
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (whoo)
My love is like a rocket, watch it blast off
And I’m feeling so electric, dance my arse off
And even if I wanted to, I can’t stop
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
My love is like a rocket, watch it blast off
And I’m feeling so electric, dance my arse off
And even if I wanted to, I can’t stop
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
You want me, I want you, baby
My sugarboo, I’m levitating
The Milky Way, we’re renegading
I got you (yeah), moonlight, you’re my starlight
I need you all night (all night), come on, dance with me
I’m levitating (whoo)
You can fly away with me tonight (tonight)
You can fly away with me tonight
Baby, let me take you for a ride
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (take you for a ride)
I’m levitating (whoo)
You can fly away with me tonight (tonight)
You can fly away with me tonight
Baby, let me take you for a ride
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (let me take you for a ride)
I got you, moonlight, you’re my starlight (you are my starlight)
I need you all night, come on, dance with me (come on, dance with me, baby)
I’m levitating
You, moonlight, you’re my starlight (you’re the moonlight)
I need you all night, come on, dance with me
I’m levitating
