“Someone You Loved” explores the difficulty of losing hope after putting one’s entire being into a relationship that ultimately fails. This song became Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi’s breakthrough hit, which catapulted him to number one in the United Kingdom.

There is one line in the song saying that there seems to be “no one” around to save the singer now as he sinks beneath the waves. He adds that this insistence on either complete success or failure drove him insane. These two sentences sum up the song perfectly. Since “this time” is used, we can assume that it has happened before, perhaps more than once and that she has always been there to rescue him from a situation where he felt hopeless or helpless.

Their eyes have no middle ground; it is either excellent or terrible, never anything in between. They cannot find a middle ground, constantly swaying across extremes.

Who are the Song Lyrics for?

Lewis, 24 years old, has been quite open and transparent about the subject matter of the song. He admits that it concerns the breakup of a relationship and the loss of a loved one in the family. “It’s the last song I wrote for the album. I just couldn’t bring myself to write another song about breaking up with a girl who I no longer harbored any feelings for whatsoever.”

“Throughout producing this album, for example, there were a few bereavements in my family and stuff like that,” he explained to NME. ” I wanted to write a song that could apply to my relationship ending, which I was writing about, and then this bereavement event that I never expected.”

After much suspicion that the song was about his ex-girlfriend, Love Island star Paige Turley, Lewis confirmed to an Australian music channel that the song was actually about his late grandma.

Lewis stated, “I was not writing this song about a girl with whom I had a romantic interest. Instead, am did it for my dead granny.”

Lewis continued to make things light: “She passed away a while ago. Death and subsequent nonreturn are typical examples of this type.”

Lyrics

I’m going under and this time I fear there’s no one to save me
This all or nothing really got a way of driving me crazy
I need somebody to heal
Somebody to know
Somebody to have
Somebody to hold
It’s easy to say
But it’s never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain

Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you’re not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

I’m going under and this time I fear there’s no one to turn to
This all or nothing way of loving got me sleeping without you
Now, I need somebody to know
Somebody to heal
Somebody to have
Just to know how it feels
It’s easy to say but it’s never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you helped me escape

Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you’re not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

And I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes
I fall into your arms
I’ll be safe in your sound ’til I come back around

For now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you’re not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

But now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you’re not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
