Thinkin’ Bout Me” is a song about missing your ex despite all that she put you through.

He feels bad for the next guy

Early on in the first verse, Morgan reveals a great deal about his feelings towards his ex-partner without directly saying so. He starts by referencing his absence of information about her, including who she’s currently seeing.

“Don’t know where you at, don’t know where you’ve been / Don’t know nothin’ ’bout that boy you’re into / Don’t feel bad for you but I feel bad for him / And all the hell you gon’ be puttin’ him through”

The narrator alludes to an awareness of her behavior, particularly the way she treats her lovers. And Morgan should know – after all, he was one of them.

The reveal of his true feelings comes as something of a bait and switch. Rather than directing his sympathy toward the woman he once loved, his heart instead goes out to her new man because of what he knows she’ll put him through and the heartache she’ll cause him.

Morgan Wallen‘s character doesn’t even know the guy, but he was intimately tied to his ex. Yet, his sympathies lie with his former lady’s latest catch rather than with her.

She won’t admit it

“Probably tell him we’re a burnt out flame / Probably tell him that I ain’t been on your mind / How I ain’t nothin’ but a long gone thing / You can cuss my name, but baby, don’t you lie”

Morgan postulates here that his ex has fabricated details about her past relationships, including the one she shared with him. He says she’s lying to her current partner about how she truly feels.

Morgan thinks that she still has feelings for him but won’t admit it. She’s even overcompensating by speaking ill of him, which is as much to convince herself as it is to convince her new man.

She would naturally try to downplay the seriousness of their relationship and act like there’s nothing to worry about just to ease his mind. Morgan theorizes that this is all a lie and that she’s still hung up on him.

Is it really over?

The chorus of “Thinkin’ Bout Me” is where Morgan fully opens up about his feelings and innermost desires, and it comes in the form of a question. He asks her to tell the truth about what’s going on in her mind, and in so doing he’s asking her to reveal one of her deepest secrets.

“When you’re tasting what he’s drinking, are you thinkin’ ’bout me? / When you’re ridin’ where he’s drivin’, are you missin’ my street? / Every time you close your eyes, tell me, who do you see?”

Morgan goes through various relatable situations that a new couple might find themselves in. These range from superficial moments to ones that cut to the core:

“Comin’ over tonight, wish that truck in your drive was mine / Just like you know it’s supposed to be / When you’re up in his bed, am I up in your head? / Makin’ you crazy, tell me, baby, are you thinkin’ ’bout me? / Are you thinkin’ ’bout, are you thinkin’ ’bout / When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?”

Morgan finishes off the chorus when he reveals that he wishes she was still with him. He feels that they belong together, and he knows that even though she’s lying with someone new, in her head lies a mess of emotions.

Lyrics

Don’t know where you at, don’t know where you’ve been
Don’t know nothin’ ’bout that boy you’re into
Don’t feel bad for you, but I feel bad for him
And all the hell you gon’ be puttin’ him through
Probably tell him we’re a burnt out flame
Probably tell him that I ain’t been on your mind
How I ain’t nothin’ but a long gone thing
You can cuss my name, but baby, don’t you lie

When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
When you’re ridin’ where he’s drivin’, are you missin’ my street?
Every time you close your eyes, tell me, who do you see?
When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ bout me?
Comin’ over tonight, wish that truck in your drive was mine
Just like you know it’s supposed to be
When you’re up in his bed, am I up in your head?
Making you crazy, tell me, baby, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
Are you thinkin’ ’bout, are you thinkin’ ’bout
When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?

Do you hide your phone? Did you change my name?
When he wants to go to our go-to place
Do you tell him you can’t? Then go out of your way
To be somewhere, any damn where I ain’t

When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
When you’re ridin’ where he’s drivin’, are you missin’ my street?
Every time you close your eyes, tell me, who do you see?
When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
Comin’ over tonight, wish that truck in your drive was mine
Just like you know it’s supposed to be
When you’re up in his bed, am I up in your head?
Making you crazy, tell me, baby, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
Are you thinkin’ ’bout, are you thinkin’ ’bout
When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?

Don’t know where you at
Girl, I know where you oughta be

When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
When you’re ridin’ where he’s drivin’, are you missin’ my street?
Every time you close your eyes, tell me, who do you see?
When you’re tastin’ what he’s drinkin’, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
Comin’ over tonight, wish that truck in your drive was mine
Just like you know it’s supposed to be
When you’re up in his bed, am I up in your head?
Making you crazy, tell me, baby, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
Yeah, are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
Are you thinkin’ ’bout me?
