“Trustfall” by P!nk is about everything from loss, love, self-acceptance, self-motivation and even the afterlife.

Everyday Life is a Trustfall

When asked by USA Today what “Trustfall” meant to her, P!nk responded, “Leaving the house, dropping your kids off at school, going to work, going to the movies, going to a mall, voting in an election, having an opinion, owning a vagina. Everything feels like it requires so much trust and I feel like we’re falling backwards and we don’t know when the ground is coming. ‘Trustfall’ is life to me.”

P!nk expressed a similar sentiment to Howard Stern on his show:

“I think that it just requires a lot of trust to even leave the house these days and to drop your kids off at school and go to public places and and just hope for the best. And I think I know a lot of kids and teenagers, and I think there’s a general feeling of anxiety, and I think we all feel like we’re falling backwards and we don’t know where the ground is, and that’s such an unsettling feeling. And so my psychologist inside of me is like, okay, well, let’s break this down. Who do we trust? What do we fall for? What are we jumping for? Who do you trust around you? Do you trust yourself? Do you know that you can handle this? And that’s where ‘Trustfall’ comes in, because I feel like we’re falling.”

P!nk also went into the secondary message behind “Trustfall” in an interview with Hits Radio: “It’s also about just shedding it all and shutting down the brain and getting out of your head and getting back into your body. And that’s what dancing is for me.”

A Safe Place

In the first verse, we hear:

“Picture a place where it all doesn’t hurt / Where everything’s safe and it doesn’t get worse, oh my / We see through bloodshot eyes / Picture a place, somewhere else far away / Where you know what they mean and they mean what they say to us / And would that be enough?”

P!nk depicts a type of sanctuary for the listener to escape from the harsh realities of life. The bloodshot eyes imply that the viewer is tired and has been through a great deal. The final element of the place P!nk describes here is the sense of honesty and mutual understanding. Still, she asks the listener whether this is enough.

In the pre-chorus:

“Are we running out of time? / Are we hiding from the light? / Are we just too scared to fight for what we want tonight?”

P!nk wants the listener to genuinely consider these things. The direness of the situation has reached a tipping point where people can no longer afford to live in blissful ignorance or hide from the fight.

When Trust Is All You’ve Got

Finally, the chorus brings it all home:

“Closе your eyes and leavе it all behind / Go where love is on our side / It’s a trust fall, baby / It’s a trust fall, baby / You and I and everyone alive / We can run into the fire / It’s a trust fall, baby / Yeah, it’s a trust fall, baby”

The sentiment here is that we’re all in this together, and you have to follow the love to keep it in your life. There are times in life when you can’t see what lies ahead, but you can still make a leap of faith.

Lyrics

Trust fall, baby
It’s a trust fall, baby

Picture a place where it all doesn’t hurt
Where everything’s safe, and it doesn’t get worse
Oh my, we see through bloodshot eyes

Picture a place, somewhere else far away
Where you know what they mean, and they mean what they say
To us and would that be enough?

Are we running out of time?
Are we hiding from the light?
Are we just too scared to fight
For what we want tonight?

Close your eyes and leave it all behind
Go where love is on our side
It’s a trust fall, baby
It’s a trust fall, baby

You and I and everyone alive
We can run into the fire
It’s a trust fall, baby
Yeah, it’s a trust fall, baby

Jump with me, come with me, burn like the sun
We’ll talk, then we’ll cry, then we’ll laugh ’til we’re done
Oh, my, it’s like we’re out our minds

We’ve been running for our lives
We’ve been hiding from the light
We’ve been far too scared to fight
For what we want tonight

Close your eyes and leave it all behind
Go where love is on our side
It’s a trust fall, baby
It’s a trust fall, baby

You and I and everyone alive
We can run into the fire
It’s a trust fall, baby
Yeah, it’s a trust fall, baby

What if we just fall?

I’m not going without you
(And you’re not going alone)
I fell so far ’til I found you
(But you know what you know, when you know)
So, I’m not going without you
(And you’re not going alone)
‘Cause you know, when you know

Close your eyes and leave it all behind
Go where love is on our side
It’s a trust fall, baby
It’s a trust fall, baby

What if we just fall?
What if we just fall?
What if we just fall?
What if we just fall?

What if we just fall?
What if we just fall?
What if we just-
